Mastering the Invisible Finish, Invisible Decrease & Invisible Increase

When you’re building a fully customizable doll, the details matter — and nothing elevates your work more than smooth, seamless stitches. Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on three of my favorite techniques: the invisible finish, the invisible decrease, and the invisible increase.

These are the little magic tricks that make your pieces look clean, professional, and ready for their close-up… almost like they spawned into the world fully formed, Final-Fantasy-style.

Let’s jump in!

🪄 The Invisible Finish (a.k.a. the “How Did You Do That?” Ending)

The invisible finish gives your round pieces a polished, perfect edge.

How it works:

  1. Fasten off, leaving a tail.
  2. Thread that tail onto a needle and insert it under both loops of the next stitch.
  3. Pull through and then insert the needle back into the center of the last stitch you made.
  4. Tug gently to shape it into a flawless fake “V.”

The result? A seamless, circular edge with zero lumps.

Great for:

  • Shirts
  • Wig caps
  • Armor bits
  • Anything round and visible!

🪶 The Invisible Decrease (smooth… like it never happened)

The invisible decrease is my go-to for shaping heads, bellies, limbs — anything where you want the shaping to be seen but not “oh, there’s a decrease” seen.

How it works:

  1. Insert your hook under the front loop only of the first stitch.
  2. Then under the front loop only of the next stitch.
  3. Yarn over, pull through both loops, yarn over, finish the single crochet.

That’s it! No holes. No weird dents. Just a clean, tight decrease.

🌱 The Invisible Increase (more stitch, less mess)

When you need a little extra room but you don’t want that telltale “bloop” of a traditional increase, the invisible increase is a game-changer.

How it works:

  1. Work one single crochet into the front loop only of the stitch.
  2. Then work one single crochet into both loops of the same stitch.

You’ve increased — without widening the stitch visually.

Perfect for:

  • Subtle shaping
  • Building curves
  • Characters with softer silhouettes
  • Custom base bodies that won’t look “lumpy”
