Getting Wild With It; How to Separate Yarn Strands for Curly textured Hair

Let’s learn how to separate yarn strands for curly textured hair! Some characters just need big energy — the kind of hair that refuses to lie flat, behaves on its own terms, and tells you everything you need to know before the doll even speaks. And one of my favorite ways to get that look?

Separating yarn strands.

Yep. Just taking the yarn apart can give you a whole world of curls, fluff, waves, and unruly magic.

Today I’m pulling back the curtain and showing you how I use this simple technique to create hair that feels alive.

Why separate yarn strands for curly textured hair?

Because Texture = Personality

When you split the plies of yarn, everything changes.

Separated yarn becomes:

  • Softer
  • Fluffier
  • Curlier
  • More expressive
  • More wild (in the best way)

It takes on a kind of chaotic charm — perfect for mischievous familiars, woodland spirits, chaotic adventurers, or any character who definitely doesn’t brush their hair.

How to Do It (Without Losing Your Mind)

It’s simple, but a little technique goes a long way.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Create your wig cap (optional, pattern for that releasing next week)
A wig cap gives a way to add the strands easily and seamlessly.
  2. Add your strands into the cap. (photo instructions for that coming next week too)
Alternate skipped loops each row so your hair doesn’t get too full. You may even want to do more spaces between with curls; it gets big fast.
  3. Start at one end and gently untwist.
Most worsted yarn has 4 plies. Separate them slowly so they don’t tangle.
  4. Let the strands puff naturally.
Once the fibers relax, the curl and fluff appear like magic.
  5. Tease & shape
Use a yarn needle, your fingers, or a soft brush to bring out extra chaos if needed. Brush VERY lightly or you may lose your curls to the brush.

The result?
A mane of pure personality.

What Kind of Characters Love This Look?

Oh, let me count the ways:

  • Forest guardians with mossy, wild curls
  • Wizards who have bigger hair than their spellbooks
  • Chaotic adventurers who haven’t brushed in… ever
  • Mischief-makers with puffed-out energy
  • Kids, creatures, familiars — anything playful or magical

This trick gives even the simplest doll an instant story.

A Few Creative Variations

Want to take it further? Try:

Mixing colors before separating for a streaked or ombré effect
Brushing fibers lightly for a cloud-like softness
Tight curls vs. loose waves — different yarns behave differently
Layering lengths for big dramatic volume
Adding braids afterward (yes, it works!)

There’s no wrong way to play.

Give It a Try!

Yarn is one of the most forgiving mediums — and separating strands is such an easy way to unlock a whole new texture. Whether you want curls that bounce or curls that absolutely misbehave, this technique makes your character feel instantly more alive.

Let your imagination go wild. Your yarn wants to.
