Pattern Overview

This Humanoid Little Dude pattern is designed as a foundational base doll for makers who want to bring a fully custom character to life. Rather than being a finished, highly stylized design, this pattern acts as a blank canvas—a starting point that allows you to build, modify, and personalize every detail to match your character’s identity.

The pattern was created specifically with Dungeons & Dragons players, MMO players, and character-driven storytellers in mind. If you’ve ever wanted to hold a physical version of your character—complete with custom hair, armor, weapons, and personality—this doll provides the structure to make that possible.

Skill level can range from advanced beginner to intermediate, depending on the options you choose. The core doll construction is beginner-friendly, while optional features such as internal wiring for poseability introduce more advanced techniques. Wiring can be included for dynamic posing or skipped entirely for a simpler, fully soft doll, making the pattern flexible for different comfort levels.

One of the defining features of this design is its adjustable proportions. Height can be modified during construction, and the simple, modular body shape makes it easy to adapt the doll to different character builds. This intentional simplicity leaves room for creativity—allowing makers to focus on customizing hair, clothing, armor, and accessories without fighting against an overly complex base form.

This pattern is also designed with future expansion in mind. Planned additions include custom ear shapes, alternative facial styles (such as draconic-inspired faces), and specialty feet like tabaxi-style paws, all of which will build seamlessly on this base doll structure. By starting with this pattern, you’re creating a foundation that can grow alongside your character ideas.

Whether you’re crafting a tabletop hero, an MMO avatar, or an original fantasy character, this Humanoid Little Dude pattern is meant to support creativity, customization, and storytelling—giving you a solid base to transform imagination into something you can see, hold, and build upon.

Supplies

1 Skein Red heart Super Saver yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 364 yds/7 oz/198 g, in desired skin tone (or desired yarn)

3.5 mm hook

Stitch marker if desired

Optional Yarn needle for tucking tails (alternatively use your hook to pull them inside the body)

Scissors, or preferred tool, for cutting yarn

18 Gauge floral wire if desired, 3-4 pcs, 12” each

Stitches that may be used, US terms:

  • Ch – Chain

  • Sl st – slip stitch

  • SC – single crochet

  • HDC – half double crochet

  • DC – Double crochet

  • TR – Treble crochet

  • Inc – increase, 2 stitches in same space

  • Dec – decrease, sc 2 stitches together (invisible or not doesn’t matter)

  • BLO – back loop only

  • FLO – front loop only

  • BO – bobble stitch, yo and pull through 4 times, yo and pull through all 4 stitches on hook

  • FO isn’t a stitch but means finish off.

  • Sk isn’t a stitch but means skip

  • MR is Magic ring, an optional method of starting

Notes:

  • I start with ch2, sc in the first chain, but you can easily swap this out with a magic ring or your preferred starting method.
  • I use invisible decreases but you are welcome to use standard decreases, the change will be minimal
  • Red words are customization tips/ideas, take them or leave them
  • I work in continuous rounds but if you are more comfortable with joining at the end of the round and chaining up then go for it! The change would be minimal, make this comfortable for yourself.
  • Change the colors! Is your character blue, purple, green? Change your color to suit. Red hair, black hair, rainbow hair? Make it yours. Think of this pattern like a very basic recipe, change the spices to suit your taste.
  • Change the yarn type if you want. If you use thicker yarn then use a bigger hook, thinner yarn use a smaller hook, be aware that the final size of your character will change.
  • To wire or not to wire, that is the question. Soft and squishy? Don’t wire. Poseable? Wire. Use your preferred wire but I use 18 gauge 18” kraft paper wire, duct tape folded over ends to prevent pokes!
  • I recommend reading through the pattern once before you begin. You don’t have to read every tiny detail. Just check out the general layout and any notes to get a feel for if or how you may want to customize. Like reading a recipe before you begin cooking or baking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this pattern suitable for beginners?
Yes, this pattern is accessible to advanced beginners, with optional elements that make it more intermediate. The core doll construction uses straightforward techniques and can be completed without added complexity. Optional features—such as internal wiring for poseability—are included for makers who want a challenge, but they can be skipped entirely to keep the project beginner-friendly.

What skill level is required if I add the internal wire?
Including wire for poseability is considered intermediate, as it requires careful placement and shaping to ensure stability and safety. If you’ve never worked with wire before, you can still complete the doll without it and return to poseable versions later once you’re comfortable with the technique.

Can I customize the doll’s height or proportions?
Yes. This pattern is designed with adjustable proportions, allowing you to modify the doll’s height during construction. The simple, modular body structure makes it easy to adapt the base doll to different character types, from shorter builds to taller humanoid forms.

What makes this doll different from standard amigurumi patterns?
Unlike traditional amigurumi designs that focus on a finished, highly stylized character, this pattern is intentionally created as a blank base. Its purpose is to support customization—serving as a foundation for unique hair styles, armor, clothing, and weapons—rather than limiting you to a single predefined look.

Is this pattern designed for specific fandoms?
This pattern was created with tabletop role-playing games and online role-playing games in mind, including Dungeons & Dragons and MMO-style characters. However, the base design is flexible enough to be used for original fantasy characters, storytelling projects, or entirely custom creations outside of any specific fandom.

Can I add custom features like ears, hair and noses?
Absolutely. The blank canvas design makes it easy to add custom elements such as different ear shapes, facial features, and hair. Future pattern expansions are planned to include options like draconic-inspired faces and tabaxi-style paws, all designed to integrate seamlessly with this base doll; however, since we start at the feet, you will need to start there, it cannot be added on later.

Can I sell finished dolls made from this pattern?
Yes. You may sell finished dolls made from this pattern on a small scale. Please do not resell or redistribute the pattern itself. Please tag me @LittleDudeCentral. I would LOVE to see your character(s)!

What materials work best for this pattern?
This pattern works well with standard worsted or DK weight yarns, though substitutions are possible depending on your desired size and texture. Using consistent yarn weight throughout the project will help maintain clean proportions, especially when adjusting height or adding custom features.
